KALON KAKON

This performance is created by Elshout/Handeler (NL) in close cooperation with Cıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası . Kalon Kakon is a theatrical dance performance based on personal experiences, questioning taboos and the projection of dreams of nine performers. It shows a kaleidoscopic view upon daily life in their city, Istanbul.
Elshout/Handeler researched the space in between the traditional and the modern together with the performers from Cıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası. Departing from observations, personal stories related to social and political issues in Turkey they redefine the battle of the sexes. In Kalon Kakon they question conventions and cliches in both a physical and theatrical way. Pandora’s Box has been used as a starting point of the working process and as a metaphor for society. When Prometheus stole the fire of Zeus and gave it to man, Zeus punished man for this act by sending Kalon Kakon, the beautiful evil. It was Pandora, she to whom all (= pantes) gifts (= dora) were given and she kept them in a box, that Zeus told her not to open. When she did, all evil known to man escaped,retaining hope.
